Arthur
Anselene is the Director of Parks and Recreation for the Town of
Herndon, Virginia. He has held this position for 28 years, and during that time
he led the department to three National Gold Medal Awards, and the department
overall earned over fifteen awards from the Virginia Recreation and Park Society
including awards recognizing Best New Facility, Programs, and Marketing.
Anselene began his career with the Martinsburg-Berkeley County, West Virginia, Recreation Board in 1973. His expertise has also extended to consulting with Economic Research Associates (ERA) of Washington, D.C. on park master plan studies for Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, and Ithaca, New York.
Anselene received a Masters Degree in Recreation Administration in 1984 from the University of Maryland and received his Bachelors Degree in 1973 from Fairmont State College in West Virginia. He also attended the University of Virginia Center for Public Policy Management Excellence Program and the Revenue Sources Management School through North Carolina State at Oglebay Park.
As a Certified Park and Recreation Professional, Art is a member of the National Recreation and Parks Association and the Virginia Recreation and Park Society. He has chaired numerous VRPS committees, including Conference Program and Site Selection, and assisted in the dedication of the Ahrens Center, the NRPA headquarters. He has also served on the Southern Regional Council.
Anselene is also very involved in his home community. He served as president, vice president, and treasurer of the Herndon Rotary and is now a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International. He has also served on the Board of Directors for the Herndon Optimist Club and is a charter member of the Board of Directors for the Herndon Foundation for the Cultural Arts.
During the course of his community work, Anselene has been named the Herndon Jaycees Citizen of the Year, the Herndon Observer Man of the Year, and the Herndon-Dulles Chamber of Commerce Town of Herndon Employee of the Year.
