Harvey Faust is Director of Parks and
Recreation for the City of Germantown, Tennessee. He has been a professional recreator since 1968 and a
certified professional with the National Recreation and Park Association since
1978.
Faust graduated from the University of Mississippi with a BS Degree in Physical Education and an M.A. in Recreation Administration. He was Director of the Oxford, Mississippi Park Commission for ten years while teaching at the University of Mississippi School of HPER. Later Faust served as Director of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs in Biloxi, Mississippi, prior to accepting the position with the Germantown Parks and Recreation Department in 1983.
Professionally, Harvey is a member of NRPA. He is currently a member of the Board of Trustees and has served on the Southern Regional Council (1977 - 1983; 1987 - 1995). He was the Chairman of that Council in 1994. He has been a member of many committees such as the Program Planning Committee, Site Selection Committee, Legislative Committee, Membership Committee, and the Council of Affiliate Presidents. In addition, Harvey served on the NRPA/Edith Upchurch Innovative Forum from 1977 - 1993 and served as the Chairman of the Forum for seven years. He served as Program Chair for the 1996 Southern Regional Conference in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and again in 2001. In 2000, the NRPA Board of Trustees chose him as the National Distinguished Professional Award winner.
In 1992 Faust was elected to the APRS Board of Directors and is the President-elect of that Branch. He was a member of the NRPA Code of Ethics Task force in 1993 and Needs Assessments Task Force in 1994. During his term on the APRS Board of Directors, Harvey served as Social Events Committee Chair - 1993, Executive Committee 1994 and 1995, Fund Raising Committee 1994 and 1995 (Chair in 1994), Education Committee Vice Chair 1995, Budget Committee 1994 and 1995, Nominations Committee 1994 and 1995, Membership Committee 1994, and APRS Administrative Division Secretary - 1994. He chaired the APRS Management Institute in 1995 in San Antonio, Texas. He was Chairman of the APRS Administrators Division of NRPA 1997-1998. In 1997 he became a member of the American Academy of Park and Recreation Administration, Chair of the Professional Development Committee for NRPA 1997-1998, and has served on the Tennessee Municipal League Board of Directors for the past seven years. He represents the Tennessee Municipal League on the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation Advisory Committee. Harvey also represented the Southern Regional Council on the NRPA National Forum for three years.
Since assuming his position in Germantown, Harvey has been a member of the Tennessee Recreation and Parks Association and has served on its Executive Board 1983-2000. He served as TRPA President in 1987-1988 and received the Fellow Award in 1991. This is the highest honor given to a professional member of TRPA.
