Jon Kirk Mukri, General Manager of the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, oversees this Department with more than 15,000 acres of parkland, 10,000 employees, a $165 million operating budget and over $600 million funding for capital projects.
Appointed in February 2004, Mukri has extensive experience as a City of Los Angeles manager. Before joining Recreation and Parks, he served for four years as General Manager of the City of Los Angeles General Services Department, which provides centralized services, including fleet services, asset management, and construction maintenance and purchasing for the City. He also served as Assistant General Manager of General Services for five years.
Mukri now applies his strong business expertise in personnel and asset management to the Department. An advocate for Los Angeles city parks and programs, he says “Parks are often the defining nucleus of a community. More than just bats and balls, the Department and it’s parks and playgrounds contribute to the physical and emotional health of the surrounding area and serve as the cultural and community centers for entire neighborhoods.”
Prior to working with the City of Los Angeles, Mukri was a Managing Group Director, Commander, Marine Corps Air Bases West and the Marine Corps Air Station at El Toro, CA; was the Officer in Charge of Navy Resale Activity in Long Beach, CA and Officer in Charge at the Navy Supply Center, also in Long Beach. He also served a Foreign Military Sales Officer for the United States Embassy in Manila, the Philippines. He had a 22-year stretch in the U.S. Navy -- from aviation to submarines.
A Los Angeles native, Mukri received his undergraduate degree from Loyola University in Los Angeles and a Masters Degree in Business from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.
