In 1954, the Pugsley Medals were reoriented to recognize the expanded roles of park facilities and services offered by local and state agencies, and that for many Americans, the most important parks were now those closest to their homes. The gold, silver and bronze medals were replaced by recognition of outstanding service at the local, regional/state, and national levels, all of equal merit.
